Rainbow In The Dark: Das Racist Pull a "Beatles," Break-up @ German Festival (2008-12)

Well, it looks like self-proclaimed "Slacker Rap-Rock" band Das Racist have broken up, and I'm really not all that surprised... Since they haven't even released a new track together since Relax (2011) - excluding that Lana del Rey remix. Co-leading emcees Kool A.D. & Heems each liberated 2 solo mixtapes over the span of 2012, THE PALM WINE DRINKARD/51 and Nehru Jackets/WILD WATER KINGDOM; Hypeman Dapwell was supposed to unveil a mixtape back in January 2012 too, but nothing ever materialized. Himanshu ended up playing a last-minute solo gig @ On3 Festival in Munich, Germany over the weekend, where he slipped up and accidentally revealed to the unsuspecting foreign crowd "I'm gonna do some Das Racist songs, but Das Racist is breaking up and we're not a band anymore." By the time Heems' comments hit The Internet(s) Sunday night, Kool A.D. was prepared to fire back a quick rebuttal, "for the record, I quit das racist 2 months ago and was asked by our manager not to announce it yet. apparently @himanshu wanted to do it [though]." I think Das Racist always seemed to work so well because of the cross-section between Heems' Mainstream Rap pipe dreams and Kool A.D.'s desire to be weird/Experimental. But I guess that tension's probably what ended up splitting up the band in the end, too.

"I was bummed when we actually broke up, when it was done, mostly because it was a way to make money really easily. Now, I probably won't be able to make money that easily ever again. But we had a plan to break up around May. We had just signed this record deal and we were going to put out one proper album and then go on a Farewell Tour, release a proper breaking up statement that could have been really funny, maybe a weird, stupid video. Now, all of that has gone to shit ... When we started in 2009, 2010, there wasn't a New York Rap scene. All that shit wasn't around, and now there is all of this stuff that, when I see it, I'm like, "Man, that looks like more fun than what I'm doing." But we kinda checked out and it was just about money, which some people can do, but apparently, we're not good at doing things we don't want to do anymore. It made everyone go crazy and get angry in such typical band fashion: guys arguing and then drinking. It's just stupid. Because in the beginning, it was just us. We'd all hang out all the time, we all lived in this apartment together. Not that we were super friends, but sort of, you know? Really, it's a huge opportunity squandered."

Oddly enough, Das Racist just signed a big-budget record deal with Sony/Megaforce back in July and were supposedly about 4-5 tracks deep into sequencing Relax's proper follow-up. REWIND!: Das Racist formed back in 2008 on the heels of "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell," but the 2 emcees met roughly 5 years earlier when Victor Vazquez [Kool A.D.] was Himanshu Suri's R.A. @ Wesleyan University. Linking up with Dapwell soon thereafter, the group released 2 critically-acclaimed mixtapes dubbed Shut Up, Dude and Sit Down, Man (2010). Das Racist managed to single-handedly spear-head New York's ever-growing Underground Rap scene, which would eventually include cats like Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Lakutis, Big Baby Gandhi, Roc Marciano, Weekend Money, etc. I got a chance to see Das Racist & Greedhead LIVE @ Union Transfer in Philly with my boy Mike AKA Mr. Moot back in October on THE AMERICAN RAP SONGS TOUR, which would ultimately be their last hurrah ... Where Are They Now?: Heems is overseas touring India & China, plus running/managing his fledging Indie label, Greedhead. "The Dumb Shiny," Kool A.D. has already formed a number of new bands - PARTY ANIMAL, Peaceful Solutions, Cult Days. Dapwell, on the other hand, was reportedly working on a Das Racist TV pilot, but will most likely just continue filming his web-series, Chillin' Island.
