Guts of The Ice - An Exploration of "Puck" Rock/Hockey-core #4: THE ZAMBONIS' Co-founder Dave "Zamboni" Schneider (The Witzard Interview)

THE ZAMBONIS & The Hanson Brothers (SOURCE: Dave Schneider)

Not entirely unlike Wrestle/Wrassle Rap or Basketball Rap, there's, apparently, a whole sub-genre of hockey-themed Punk/Hardcore—oftentimes, referred to as "Puck" Rock or Hockey-core. Yes, I've been a die-hard fan of Punk/Hardcore for 15+ years and I, too, only first heard about Puck Rock within the last few weeks. Although, once I started diggin' around, I discovered about 10-15 bands at the forefront; this was, then, gradually narrowed down to 10 "front-line" bands, which will be chronicled here over the course of coming weeks. The "top-scoring" bands we selected include: Crippled Youth, SLAPSHOT, The Hanson Brothers/Nomeansno, Two Man Advantage, The Boils, D.O.A. THE ZAMBONIS, Pansy Division, The Hextalls, and The Ramoms' "Gritty Is A Punk" flexi-disc. We sent out a short 6-question interview form to all of the aforementioned bands, received some back, heard a few choice words, and still have yet to hear from a few more. We'll be running those interviews, as well as features, profiles, etc. in the coming weeks. EDITOR'S NOTE: be warned, while I'm a casual hockey fan, I DO NOT claim to be an "expert" on the sport, nor will I EVER claim to know "everything" about hockey-themed Punk/Hardcore. Now, let's just try to have some fun and learn more about the sub-genre together!

This week's featured artist, THE ZAMBONIS are widely known as "the greatest and only ALL-Hockey Rock band." THE ZAMBONIS' current line-up consist of Dave "Zamboni" Schneider, Cary "Twangy" Pollick, Alex "Swifty" Swift, Nick "Stick" Morcaldi, and Matt Gonzalez AKA The Hockey Monkey; members "ON THE BENCH" (still called in to play gigs) include Tim Walsh, Tarquin Katis, Peter Katis, Shawn Fogel, Tom Andrukevich, Steve Tanski, Bob Anderson, Rich Dart, and Mike Sembos. Since forming in 1991, THE ZAMBONIS have penned both official/unofficial anthems for The Colorado Avalanche, The Boston Bruins, The Hartford Whalers, and The Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2002, the band played The NHL All-Star Game at The Staples Center in Los Angeles alongside Jewel, Five for Fighting & Unwritten Law. THE ZAMBONIS have played shows with Two Man Advantage, Jonathan Richman, Atom & His Package, Chris Frantz & Tina Weymouth from Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club, Guster, and "toured with" The Stanley Cup. THE ZAMBONIS' music has been featured in Blades of Glory, Nickelodeon's KaBlam!, Last Days of The Coliseum, NBC Sports' Puckland, and FOX's short-lived The Loop. We were fortunate enough to speak with THE ZAMBONIS' Captain/guitarist Dave "Zamboni" Schneider for this installment of Guts of The Ice. Schneider was kind enough to put together a comprehensive Spotify playlist for us entitled Dave & THE ZAMBONIS' Punk Rock & Hockey-core Hits for The Witzard. Stay tuned for our interview with the world-famous Hockey Monkey dropping later this week!

Sincerely,

Matt "The Witzard" Horowitz
Puck Rock/Hardcore Purveyor

01. How did you first get into both hockey and Punk/Hardcore music?

Dave Zamboni:
Hockey started for me with my dad taking me and my two brothers to games at the now-blown up New Haven Coliseum; the home for The AHL's New Haven Nighthawks. That was in the 70's. Punk was handed down to me by my older brother. It all started with a cassette he had gotten from a friend from Australia: The Damned, Boomtown Rats, The Clash, and The Saints. It was exactly what I needed to get me charging in a good direction, musically.

02. What made you decide to combine hockey and Punk/Hardcore stylings through music?

Zamboni:
1991: one of my favorite band was The Philistines, Jr. It was a band from [Connecticut] that was made up of two brothers, Peter & Tarquin Katis. I ended up becoming friends with them and realized, I HAD to be in a band with them. We all liked hockey. The Philistines, Jr. flew to England on an invite to do a Peel Session by one John Peel, himself. I went with them. While there, we wanted to watch a hockey game. We looked everywhere in the city of London but, NO HOCKEY to be found. I suggested we should write a song about hockey instead. Tarquin said, "awesome," Peter said I was "an idiot" and the band started that night.

03. For fans new to the "Puck" Rock/Hardcore sub-genre, which release(s) from throughout your discography would you recommend starting out with?

Zamboni:
"Shot...Score!" [from our] first 7-inch and eventually, on our first record (1995.)

"Wendel" [from] 110% HOCKEY...and other stuff. (1995.)

"Lost My Teeth," "Johnny Got Suspended" & "Hockey Monkey" [from] More Songs About Hockey ...and buildings and food. (1999.)

"My Back Hurts" [from] Chippy Sessions (2008.)

"Joey Saves (Dee Dee Scores)" & "Joey Saves (Hockey T.V. Party)" [from our] new single and Ramones Tribute (2017.)

EDITOR'S NOTE: See our YouTube playlist below!

04. Aside from your own band's music, what other hockey-themed groups, releases, singles, etc. would you recommend, as well?

Zamboni:
A treasure trove is on the first Johnny Hanson Presents... Puck Rock, Vol. 1 CD.

Atom & His Package - "Goalie"
Pansy Division - "Manada"

EDITOR'S NOTE: See our YouTube playlist below!

05. If still active, what are the future plans for your band? If currently inactive, do you have any immediate plans for any special re-issues or a proper reunion/comeback?

Zamboni:
We have a brand spankin' [new] record coming out on September 13; more songs about nothing but hockey. We are playing a private hockey banquet in Boston in March (we are a hockey band, why not?) and playing with The Figgs in New Haven, CT at Cafe Nine on April 18th. We are, also, incredibly excited to release the first-ever puck with Don Rickles' face on it (true story)

06. What would you, likely, deem your favorite hockey/sports-related event or gig THE ZAMBONIS have been asked to play?

Zamboni:
Playing The NHL ALL-STAR GAME 2002 at The STAPLE CENTER in Los Angeles, CA. Sang from atop the zamboni in-between periods. The whole NHL ALL-STAR [team lined up] outside of our dressing room, awaiting to go out on the ice. Jagr, Lemieux, Roy, Federov, etc. etc. On the other side of the hall, the entire 1980 USA Hockey team, also, waiting to go out as a special tribute to them. We had huge headaches from smiling that night.

Runner-ups:

1.) Playing the most hockey wedding ever in Boston. Groom's Family vs. Bride's Family on the ice. Priest was the ref. Everyone on skates. Game finishes (Groom's won) We ZAMBONIS set up on the ice, play a full set, while everybody else puts the skates on and enjoys the hockey music. We played, they skated.

2.) Playing one of the many Dennis Leary benefits he does to benefit firefighters. This one was in Worcester, MA benefiting six firefighters that, sadly, lost their lives. Tons of celebs at the event and we skated with them, too. At the end of the night, we went to say "goodnight" and "nice meeting you" to the great Bobby Orr and he made our lives complete by calling [us] "a bunch of whacky singing hockey nuts."

[W]reckless, Topless American Youth: Lana del Rey - "Born 2 Die" (Britney Spears Birthday 30)

Lana del Rey [Lizzy Grant] effectively became 2011's "It Girl" with the release of her phenomenal debut single, "Video Games" (Stranger) . Like many struggling singer-songwriters, Grant has been signed, dropped, and significantly changed her public image since bursting onto the scene (2009). With that said, it can be assumed that Lana del Rey has collected just as many "haters" as she has avid supporters. To be perfectly honest, the only other artist I can think of that made this much commotion... garnered so much wide-spread buzz/hate and critical acclaim -- right out of the gates -- with just one track is Britney Spears . And maybe in this post- Mike musical era, that's the true synthesis of Pop Culture: Britney Lynn Spears . After months of repeated teasing and speculation, Lana del Rey 's major label debut, Born 2 Die will [finally] be released this coming Jan. 30-31, 2012. Pitchfork reports that it will feature "Off to The Ra

3 Feet High & Rising: Band of Bearded Brothers Cellar Door Moon Crow Unleash Rollicking Single "Whistler" from Upcoming Blues Rock EP (Bandcamp, self-released)

Whistler by Cellar Door Moon Crow British Rock 2-piece band Cellar Door Moon Crow mysteriously found and Followed The Witzard (@SharpCheddar856) on Twitter a few months ago. Their Facebook About section simply lists a brief, yet fitting, mission statement: "Band ~ Beards ~ Brothers Goodwin brothers Phil & Tommy . Sheffield, UK " and their accompanying Biography section contains a similar refrain: "Band ^ Beards ^ Brothers," as well as their Bandcamp page. There really isn't much else to be known about twin brothers Phil & Tom Goodwin , aside from the fact that they make infectious, down and dirty Rock "N" Roll —all entirely written, recorded, produced, and mixed in-house by Cellar Door Moon Crow (CDMC) themselves. CDMC 's Bandcamp page often tags their musical output as " British Rock , Rock, Blues Rock , two-piece band, Sheffield " and I would best liken their sound to a stylistic mix between The Black Keys , Thir

"Let Me Shine for You:" Lindsay Lohan for Playboy (Winter 2011-12 Leak)

Lindsay Lohan essentially embodies exactly "What NOT to Do In Hollywood :" Fame, fortune, success... sex, drugs & Rock "N" Roll . Within a fairly short period of time, Lohan somehow managed to obtain a plentiful helping of POWER @ a very young age. This gradual rise-downfall was captured on film; Between 1998-2010, she portrayed a wide array of roles across the silver screen in movies including: Mean Girls, Bobby , Herbie Fully Loaded , Georgia Rule, Machete , and Freaky Friday . Between rapid-paced film shoots, Lindsay Lohan also found time to record 2 Pop Rock albums for Casablanca , Speak (2004) and A Litter More Personal-Raw (2005). Needless to say, Lindsay Lohan has gotten roped up in a lot of troubles and woes with the law over the last 3-5 years... a vicious cycle of drugs, arrest, court, rehab, "daddy issues," jail time [Repeat]. That's the pure basics of it - But Google that shit for additional info, if necessary. Towards the end of
