The Rusty Nutz Return with "Tony Garage" from Halloween 3-inch Mini-CD/Pre-album Single (Lavender Sweep Records)
The Rusty Nutz are an Experimental Punk/"lo-fi weird Indie Pop" band hailing from Swansea, Wales, UK. Initially formed in 1998, The Nutz consists of long-time members, frontman Anthony "Ant" Jones, guitarist/vocalist Simon Jones, bassist Martyn Kelly, and drummer Craig "The Finger" Rees. According to Discogs, The Rusty Nutz "recorded and released several hundred songs on cassette between the years 1998-2002, before splitting [up]. Although, several rumors have stated that the band never broke up and have never stopped writing." As recently as 2016, a number of cassette tapes feared forever lost, were suddenly re-discovered, prompting Ant & Simon with their then line-up to re-record four dusty old demos from 1999-2000, as well as a new track, "Mirror Slander" for a 2017 EP, TOUPÈE OR NOT TOUPÈE? on Lavender Sweep Records. It appears as though The Rusty Nutz are currently writing and recording tracks for a new album tentatively and awesomely-titled We tried to make it big but something somewhere went wrong and we can't work out what that something is. I've been sporadically messaging back-and-forth with someone from @TheRustyNutz on Twitter for the better part of the last year or so; I actually, received a message as recently as this past Monday about "a new 2-track singe on 3" CD" that would be available before week's end "with a bit of luck."
Miraculously, just a matter of days later, it has now been revealed that said 3" mini-CD single, "Tony Garage," has been effectively released digitally. 30 super-limited edition 3" mini-CD's are currently available for pre-order from Swansea-based Lavender Sweep Records to ship out on or around Halloween. "Tony Garage" is backed by B-side "Popty Ping" (Alt. version) and it appears as though both tracks were recorded as recently as Sunday, September 15, 2019 by Leigh Fuge at Sound Surgery Studio. It's a little bit premature to start judging We tried to make it big but... based off one mere newly-released track, but "Tony Garage" is a bit more The Misfits/Black Flag-leaning than TOUPÈE OR NOT TOUPÈE?, which I would, more so, musically, compare to the likes of alt-J/Radiohead. Honestly, one of the best parts of "Tony Garage" is The Nutz's chunky/Punky, chug-a-lug guitar riff backed by the repeatedly screamed refrain, "Everything he does is risky, he's 93 steps ahead... TONY GARAGE!" If you're in or around Swansea, Wales, UK and free this upcoming Sunday, October 6th around 7:00pm, The Rusty Nutz will be playing a gig at Hangar18 Music Venue (@hangar18mv) as part of The Swansea Fringe 4-day festival. The Rusty Nutz's 3-inch TONY GARAGE mini-CD's are currently available to pre-order directly from Lavender Sweep Records. 🎃
